Chlamydia In Men
Chlamydia in men is
more widespread than any other male sexually transmitted disease, with millions of new reported cases each
year. Depending on the source you read, the number spans between 2.9 and 4 million new cases per year, making it
the most often reported bacterial STD (sexually transmitted disease) in the US.
Chlamydia is the shortened form of
the name of this STD, and stands for 'Chlamydia Trachomatis'. Chlamydia trachomatis is a bacterium; in
chlamydia in men, the most common site of the infection is inside the urethra, the tube through which men urinate
and pass sperm; in women the primary site is on the cervix, which is the opening between the uterus and the
vagina.
In chlamydia in men the bacteria are found in the urine and sperm since both pass
through the urethra; in women the bacteria are most commonly passed through vaginal secretions, but if the urethra
becomes infected then the chlamydia bacteria will be passed through urine also. During unprotected sex these
bacteria will transfer through genital fluids from one partner to the other. Unprotected anal sex, whether by
straight or gay partners, also puts you at risk of contracting chlamydia.
Chlamydia in men, especially men under 25 who have had more than one partner
within the last year, affects a huge portion of the population and sexually active young people should make a point
of having frequent chlamydia tests. If you are active with multiple partners you should be tested for chlamydia
often, especially before beginning with a new partner. And since chlamydia in men will not even evince symptoms in
half the men who have it, if you are active with multiple partners you should still have chlamydia testing even if
you do not see any symptoms of chlamydia in yourself. Engaging in safe sex using condoms is the most
ecouraged measure in preventing chlamydia in men or any other STD. If you suspect you have chlamydia,
